Records of and information about a family-owned, Winona (Minn.)-based lumber company, and more than 75 associated logging, lumber, land, colonization, and other companies. Includes correspondence and subject files, minute books, annual reports, tax returns, log scale reports, and accounting records. There is extensive information on land acquisition and logging and lumbering in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Louisiana, and the Pacific Northwest; taxation, management, and sale of cutover lands; lumber camps; sawmills; transportation of logs and lumber; the manufacture of lumber; and the marketing of lumber, bricks, lime, cement, paper, glass, and other building materials at retail yards in Minnesota and North and South Dakota. There is information about lumber trade associations; legislation relating to the timber industry; grading and inspection of lumber; forests and forstry; forest fire prevention; timber trespass; labor in the woods and mills; scaling; relations with railroads; insurance; cooperation with the Wisconsin state and county boards of immigration; pine land investigations; and dams and the improvement of streams. The Potlatch Lumber Company was incorporated in 1903 and acquired large timber holdings in Latah County, Idaho. In 1905-06 it constructed the company town of Potlatch and the largest white pine sawmill in the world in that community.
